Viral Advice about Cell Phones and Emergency Situations
There has been a viral post floating around that tells you to record a new voicemail greeting if you're lost, without signal, and your phone battery is running low. It sounds great at first, but is terrible 'advice' and potentially dangerous.
Recording a voicemail greeting requires cell phone service. If you're in a spot that has cell phone service and you find yourself in an emergency, just dial 911.
If your service provider does not have towers in the area, but another service provider has them, your phone will say 'emergency call only', which means you can still call 911 - but you won't be able to change your voicemail greeting.
As always let friends or family know where you're traveling, when you're leaving, and when you'll be back. This has been and always will be the best advice.
