  • New England chapter suffers the loss of a member

The month of November ended on a sad note for the New England chapter. It is with a very heavy heart that I must announce that Doug Pierini (of Doug and Elaine from Harwich, MA in the big green Mean Bean teardrop) passed away very unexpectedly on November 26th. Doug suffered a very bad fall that resulted in a serious head injury which he was unable to survive.

I was deeply saddened when Elaine shared the news of Doug's passing with me. He and Elaine are newer members of the New England Chapter. Their first gathering with us was at Salt Rock State Park in 2023, but, after that first gathering with them, I knew that they were going to be a great addition to our Tearjerker family. They joined us for several gatherings after that and truly became part of the fold.

Doug had a gruff exterior and a classic sarcastic New England wit that won me over quickly. I truly enjoyed chatting with him at meals and around the fire. He was a big HAM radio enthusiast. He and Elaine are both Ham operators and we spoke often about the hobby as it is something that I have been curious about for some time. At each gathering Doug would encourage me to just go ahead and get my HAM license. I told him I would. At our last gathering together in Rhode Island, Doug surprised me by gifting me with the HAM radio study guide and told me to get to studying so that I could get my technician's license and be a part of the hobby as well. I told him I would, and I intend to keep that promise to him in his memory.

I extend my most heartfelt condolences to ElaineM as she navigates this difficult time. I hope that as time goes by she will consider joining us around the campfire again when she is ready. There will always be a spot there for her.

Rest in Peace Doug. We're going to miss you by the fire.
